Quito, July 12, 2017 – A delegation of the European Parliament made up of Helmut Scholz and Lola Sánchez Caldentey, members of the GUE/NGL political group (Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left) will be in Ecuador between the 17 and 21 of July. The aim of this visit is to verify the damages caused by Chevron that are the main reason of the legal process carried out by the Amazonian communities against the oil company.
During this time in Ecuador different activities will be carried out in Lago Agrio and Quito. They will be related to the “Texaco Case”, the discussion in Geneva about the Binding Treaty on the corporate impunity, and the report of the Audit Committee on Bilateral Treaties.
On Tuesday, July 18, from 08:00 in the morning, they will perform the “toxitour”, which consists of the visit of some areas where Texaco (now Chevron) operated. This will allow them to verify the contamination and the impacts in the region. During the visit they will be carried by the members and leaders of the Union of the Affected People by Texaco (UDAPT). At 18:30 of the same day, it is scheduled the Forum “Human Rights, Extractivism and Corporations,” which will include as panellists MEPs Sholz and Sánchez; Robinson Yumbo, delegate of the UDAPT; Pablo Fajardo, lawyer of the Case; and an academic from the Universidad Estatal Amazónica. The event will take place in the auditorium of the Martha Bucaram de Roldós Institute.
On Thursday, July 20, in Quito – Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, room Manuela Espejo, at 10:00 and 11:00, they will hold a public press conference about the Binding Treaty and Human Rights. In the afternoon of the same day, starting at 2:00 pm, they will hold a meeting with some delegates from environmental and human rights organizations, in order to have a better understanding of the situation of the country related to the topics discussed before.
MEPs arrive in Ecuador, in view of an invitation of the affected people by Texaco, to verify the damages caused by the oil company and to analyze the process against Chevron. William Lucitante, Coordinator of the UDAPT, expressed his satisfaction for the sensitivity of the European dignitaries to the struggle of the communities of Ecuador.
Helmut Scholz, Die Linke MEP (Berlin, 1954) is the coordinator of the GUE / NGL political group in the International Trade Commission and member of the same; he is member of the Constitutional Affairs and of the Delegation for Relations with the United States in the European Parliament. He was the relator for the Parliament’s report on Ecuador’s accession to the EU-Colombia and Peru Trade Agreement.
Lola Sánchez Caldentey, Podemos MEP (Cartagena, 1977), she is the coordinator of the GUE / NGL political group in the Development Committee and member of the same; she is member of the Delegation for Relations with the Republic of China and of the Committee on International Trade. She was responsible for the report of the Union’s initiative in the garment sector, obtaining the approval of the report by a very large majority.
